A small London creative studio, founded in 2012 by Aries Moross, that designs identities, shows, merchandise and animation for artists, festivals, brands and cultural organisations.
Studio Moross is a multidisciplinary creative studio in London. Its own website says it works across music, culture, entertainment and commercial design, and lists services such as branding, campaigns, live shows, broadcast design, merchandise, packaging, motion graphics and illustration. Its clients include Kylie Minogue, Sam Smith, Disclosure and the Spice Girls, brands such as Nike and Uniqlo, platforms such as MTV, Netflix, Nickelodeon, Spotify and Riot Games, festivals such as Glitterbox, Lovebox and Parklife, and cultural groups such as the BFI, the Design Museum and the Roundhouse. A well-known early project was the relaunch of the Dreamland amusement park in Margate.
Aries Moross, who has used the name Kate Moross in earlier years, founded the studio in 2012 to turn an illustration and art-direction career into a broader studio. Wikipedia says Aries went on to be a show director for artists. They studied graphic design at Camberwell, launched a vinyl record label while still a student and sat on a D&AD awards jury in 2012. The studio's website has no formal mission statement. Its theme, instead, is building visual worlds for clients. Aries is described as promoting inclusive, progressive business practices.
The studio's address is 4 Underwood Row, London N1. A 2018 Design Council article said about 12 people worked there, 11 in London and one in Atlanta, and Wikipedia gave about ten staff in 2021. The website lists a team of more than a dozen across design, motion and production. We found no other UK office. The studio works from London for clients across the UK, though many of its jobs are for global brands and artists.
The Design Council article describes a collaborative, non-hierarchical culture. Work is given to people by their expertise rather than seniority, junior staff are client-facing and many ideas come from them. Staff typically worked about seven hours a day then, which the studio saw as a deliberate departure from industry norms. Kate Moross, as the founder was then known, argued that loving your field does not mean giving your life up for it, and said, "I want them to be proud and feel good about their job." The studio had a diversity policy and said it used Instagram and Creative Access to find people from different backgrounds. These are the studio's own claims, from 2018.
Jobs in a studio like this include designers, illustrators, motion designers who make animation, art directors, production and project managers, and studio and culture staff, as the team list on the website shows. It is a good example of how design, music and live events overlap. If you love posters, album covers, festival branding or stage visuals, this is a close look at the people who make them.
