Scotland's own commercial broadcaster, making and showing STV News, STV Player and programmes from Glasgow, plus the STV Studios production arm.
STV is a Scottish broadcaster and production group. It holds the Channel 3 licences for central and northern Scotland, and runs STV, the on-demand service STV Player and news programmes such as STV News at Six and Scotland Tonight. It also has a production arm, STV Studios, and is the only independent company in the ITV Channel 3 network.
The STV name launched on 30 May 2006, replacing the Scottish Television and Grampian Television identities. We did not find a formal mission statement. When stv.tv launched, the stated aim was to become Scotland's main source of online information and entertainment with a younger audience focus, and a strong sense of serving Scottish viewers runs through its news and entertainment. Scottish Television is now legally STV Central Ltd and Grampian Television is STV North Ltd, so the old regional names live on in the company structure.
STV's headquarters has been at Pacific Quay in Glasgow since July 2006. It also has bases in Aberdeen (Tullos), Edinburgh (Queensferry Road), Dundee (Dundee Technology Park) and Inverness (Stoneyfield Business Park). It serves a combined population of just under 5 million viewers. Dumfries and Galloway and the Borders are covered by ITV Border instead. STV Central is based at the Glasgow headquarters and STV North in Aberdeen, with sub-regions of Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow. The Edinburgh studio closed in 2024 with operations moving to Queensferry Road in 2025.
Named people include Rufus Radcliffe as chief executive (according to 2025 reporting), Linda Grimes Douglas as head of news and Bobby Hain as director of channels. Taggart, the Glasgow-set crime drama, is one of STV's best-known network exports. In September 2025 STV announced plans to replace its two regional news services with one programme from Glasgow, which would close the Aberdeen studios, subject to approval. STV launched an HD channel in 2010 and a +1 service in 2011, and in 2017 its local channels were merged into the national STV2 network. Scotsport ran from 1957 to 2008, and Scotland Tonight has aired since 2011.
Jobs include journalists and presenters, camera and studio crews, producers, digital and app developers, advertising sales and finance teams. We have not researched careers pages, and our sources did not give a current headcount, so check STV's own website for the latest on roles and locations.
