About Supermassive Games

Supermassive Games is a studio in Guildford, Surrey, known for story-led horror and drama games. Its best-known titles are Until Dawn, the Dark Pictures Anthology and The Quarry. It also worked on Little Nightmares III and released Directive 8020 in May 2026. In 2023 it won the MCV/Develop Major Studio of the Year award, and its games have won Gamescom awards. Many of its games let players make choices that change how the story ends. It began as a second-party developer for Sony, making LittleBigPlanet downloadable content and PlayStation Move games, before Until Dawn in 2015 became its breakout hit. The Dark Pictures Anthology began with Man of Medan in 2019 and continued with Little Hope, House of Ashes and The Devil in Me. The Quarry followed in 2022.

The studio was founded in 2008 by Pete and Joe Samuels, and is now fully owned by Nordisk Games, part of the Egmont Group, since 2022. It describes itself as having a passion to deliver high-end interactive drama and a wish to carve a unique path in games. Until Dawn won a BAFTA, and the studio has won TIGA awards and the MCV/Develop Major Studio of the Year in 2023.

Supermassive has two offices in Guildford, Ranger House and 65 Woodbridge Road. Guildford is a well-known centre of the UK games industry and has been home to many studios over the years. Wikipedia reports about 350 employees in 2023.

The studio lists four values on its own site. Be Creative means encouraging ideas and accepting mistakes. Be Open means honesty, psychological safety and constructive feedback. Strive for Quality means high standards and accountability. Be One Team means helping each other and sharing wins. These are the company's own claims, so ask about them at interview. It also says it supports diversity and career development, and works with the charity GamesAid and with schools and universities.

The studio's early history helps explain its style: it began making downloadable content for LittleBigPlanet and games for the PlayStation Move motion controller, and Until Dawn was first planned as a Move game. The Casting of Frank Stone was made with Behaviour Interactive, and Dark Pictures games were published with Bandai Namco and The Quarry with 2K. Interactive drama needs writers, actors working with motion capture, artists, animators, programmers, designers, sound staff and producers. A studio like this also needs testers, who play through every possible branch of the story. English, drama, art, music and computer science all link to these jobs. The studio's careers page and email address for applications are on its website.
