Sweco UK

The UK arm of the European engineering and architecture consultancy Sweco, working on roads, rail, water, buildings and digital projects from offices across England, Scotland and Wales.

About Sweco UK

Sweco is a European architecture and engineering consultancy, and its UK business designs and advises on infrastructure, buildings and the environment. Its UK website groups its work into four areas: buildings and urban areas, transport infrastructure (rail, road, tunnels, bridges and ports), digital solutions such as digital twins and data platforms, and water, energy and industry. It also advises on mission critical infrastructure and on building standards and compliance. The company says its aim is to help build sustainable societies.

The UK business began in April 2016 when Sweco took over the Dutch-owned consultancy Grontmij's UK operations and rebranded them. By June 2017 it had about 800 people and 12 UK offices in Gateshead, Stockton-on-Tees, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, London, Maidenhead, Manchester, Peterborough and Solihull, and it opened the Stockton office that month with four transport specialists. Its projects then included the A96 upgrade in Scotland, research stations for the British Antarctic Survey, a smart motorway on the M3 in Hampshire, and upgrades on the A1 in northern England. A recruitment partner page lists a newer set of offices in London, Bristol, Solent (Whiteley), Maidenhead, Cambridge, Leeds, Birmingham, Preston and Chelmsford, though that page is undated.

Sweco describes its people as future planners, city shapers and net zero chasers, and says it values diversity and inclusion and wants consultants to act decisively without unnecessary bureaucracy. Group chief executive Gunnar Nordström says the goal is clean water, clean air and clean energy and a physical environment where people can live and work well. The group has about 23,000 architects, engineers and other experts, listed on the Stockholm stock exchange, according to a July 2026 announcement.

That announcement said Alex Lane would become Business Area President for Sweco UK from 1 October 2026 and join the group executive team. He has led teams across the UK and Europe in built environment, infrastructure, transport and defence, and had been at Jacobs since 2012. We could not find a current UK headcount, and the company's own pages give no office list for today, so the picture is a mixture of dated and recent sources.

Roles in Sweco UK include civil, highways, rail and bridge engineers, water and environmental specialists, architects and urban designers in the wider group, digital and data specialists, project managers and support staff. A graduate programme is mentioned on its site, but as with all companies the best way to learn about current roles is its own website.
