About Tag Games

Tag Games is a video game studio in Dundee, Scotland. It makes games for mobile phones and tablets, mixing its own ideas with games for well-known clients such as Rovio, Activision, EA and Ubisoft. Its titles include Doctor Who: The Mazes of Time, Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes, Angry Birds Action! and Pocket Mortys. Tag also made Car Jack Streets in 2008, among its earliest releases.

It was founded in 2006 by Paul Farley, Jamie Bryan and Robert Henning. Farley and Bryan had worked on games such as Grand Theft Auto at DMA Design and VIS Entertainment, two famous Scottish studios, so the company grew out of Dundee's long games history. It was one of the first European developers for iPhone and iPad. We did not find a formal mission statement in the pages we read.

Its first free-to-play mobile game, Funpark Friends in 2011, won the Herald Scotland award for best Scottish mobile game that year. In June 2023 the American company Scopely bought the studio, which became Scopely Studio Dundee with about 60 staff who all transferred over. Marc Williamson became head of studio and said the business remained committed to Dundee and hoped to create more jobs there. Scopely had backed the studio in 2021 as part of a $50 million investment across three European studios, so the 2023 purchase continued an existing relationship.

Dundee is known across the world for games, with a large community of studios and a university that teaches games design. Tag's staff work in that environment, and the company has talked about looking beyond Scotland for talent. A report suggests one of its games, Pocket Mortys, was set to close in January 2026, so check the studio's current projects.

A mobile studio employs programmers, artists, designers, producers and QA testers, and for live games also analysts and community staff. It is a good example of a games business outside London and a place to learn how games are kept running after launch. The studio's website now calls it "A Scopely Studio", so the group name is the one used on its homepage today. A good way to prepare is to build a small mobile game with free tools, learn the basics of Unity or similar engines, and look at what Dundee's university courses and local games community offer. Skills in maths, art, writing and problem solving all feed into mobile development.
