Tala

A London sustainable activewear and lifestyle brand, founded in 2019 by Grace Beverley, making leggings, tops and other clothes from recycled and upcycled materials.

About Tala

Tala is a sustainable activewear and lifestyle brand. It sells leggings, sports bras, tops and other clothes for training and everyday wear, described as ethically made, high-performance clothing from upcycled and recycled materials. It positions itself as an alternative to fast fashion, offering good-quality, lower-impact kit at prices that more people can afford. The brand has worked on wider sizing, extending its range to 2XL-4XL, and says its packaging uses upcycled, recycled and natural materials. Most of what it sells goes through its own website, but it also has shops and concessions.

Tala was founded in 2019 by Grace Beverley, who first became known as a fitness and lifestyle creator online and who also created a workout and planner brand called Shreddy. Its mission, in its own words, is to create "sustainable and high-performance activewear, without the hefty price tag", with sustainability, transparency and ethics at the core. Ms Beverley argues that sustainable fashion is a contradictory idea, because encouraging people to buy more works against sustainability, so Tala's pitch is that it should replace less sustainable activewear purchases rather than add to them. She also says diversity and inclusion should be the essence of the business, not a marketing exercise.

Tala's UK head office is at Shelton Street in Covent Garden, London, according to a trade directory. The same directory says its clothes are sold through concessions in Anthropologie, Selfridges, END., ASOS, NEXT and Simply Be, and headlines refer to Tala shops on Carnaby Street and in Westfield London and a planned Edinburgh store. We did not read those pages, so check the company's website for the current list of shops.

On culture, the interviews describe a brand that grew quickly by talking directly to people on social media, and a founder who treats social platforms as a major shopping tool. The first photo shoot was deliberately diverse and its social media features products on a range of body types. These are statements from the company and its founder. We did not find reliable information on team size or the daily culture, so we have not guessed.

Roles in a brand like this include product designers and technical designers who choose fabrics and fits, sourcing and quality staff who work with factories, e-commerce and data teams, social media and content creators, and shop staff and managers in the stores. There are also finance, people and operations roles. If you like fashion, fitness or the way brands use social media, Tala is a good example to follow. The company's own website is the place to check for roles in the head office and stores.
