The UK arm of Tata Steel, making flat steel, coated and packaging steel and construction products at Port Talbot, Llanwern, Trostre and Shotton.
Tata Steel UK makes steel for buildings, cars, packaging and many other uses. Its base is the Port Talbot steelworks in Wales, the largest steelworks in the UK. Steel coils are rolled at Port Talbot and Llanwern near Newport, coated at Shotton in north Wales and made into tinplate at Trostre. The company's product range includes hot-rolled and cold-rolled steel, coated and high-strength steel, tinplate for food cans, electrical steel, steel tubes, and construction products such as Colorcoat roofing and cladding, ComFlor floor decking and Catnic lintels. It also runs service centres that cut and prepare steel for customers.
The Port Talbot works has a long history. The Abbey Works opened in 1951 and was fully working by 1953, and in the 1960s it was Europe's largest steelworks. It passed through public ownership as part of the British Steel Corporation, then merged to form Corus. Tata bought Corus in 2007, and it was renamed Tata Steel Europe in 2010. The company's own pages we could read did not state a mission or values, but they describe a route to becoming a carbon-neutral steelmaker by 2045, which it calls Optemis.
The company is in the middle of a big change in how it makes steel. The last blast furnace at Port Talbot closed in October 2024, and since then the rolling plants have used imported steel slabs. A new electric arc furnace, which melts recycled scrap steel using electricity, has been approved for Port Talbot and is reported to be expected in late 2027. Wikipedia says about 2,000 people now work at Port Talbot, down from over 4,000, so this has been a hard time for many families in the area.
Tata's UK sites are spread across south and north Wales, with a service centre at Llanwern and a Colorsteels centre at Shotton. The company page also lists a Steelpark service centre and an Ireland service centre in Lisburn. Port Talbot is the largest private employer in the town according to Wikipedia. We found no company statements about culture, so we do not describe it here.
A modern steel business employs far more than the people near the furnaces. Roles include metallurgists, process and electrical engineers, maintenance technicians, coating and quality specialists, environmental and energy teams, supply chain planners, and sales, finance and HR staff. If you like chemistry, physics, maths, design technology or environmental science, this is one of the sectors where the subject you study at school connects directly to a product you can see on buildings, cars and the tins in your kitchen cupboard.
