A UK mobile network sold through Tesco stores and online, run as a joint venture with Virgin Media O2 on the O2 network.
Tesco Mobile is a mobile phone service sold by Tesco, the supermarket, and run as a joint venture with Virgin Media O2. It sells pay-as-you-go SIMs, SIM-only plans and phone contracts, and it uses the Virgin Media O2 network. In a 2024 announcement, Virgin Media O2 described it as the UK's largest mobile virtual network operator, with over 5.5 million customers. That means a business born inside a supermarket now has a customer base on the scale of some network operators.
Wikipedia says Tesco Mobile was founded on 29 May 2003 in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, and launched pay-as-you-go services in Tesco stores and online by the end of 2003. In January 2024 Tesco and Virgin Media O2 agreed a ten-year renewal of the joint venture, which had previously been shared between Tesco and Telefonica UK. The pages we read do not include a formal mission statement. In the renewal announcement, chief executive Jonathan Taylor said the aim was to "continue to offer our customers the best value, helpful propositions and award-winning service".
Wikipedia lists the headquarters as Welwyn Garden City in Hertfordshire. Its products are sold in Tesco stores across the UK, so many customers meet it in the supermarket, and Tesco's Jason Tarry pointed to the benefits of supermarket mobile, including Clubcard Prices. The company has also run similar joint ventures in Ireland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, but this entry covers the UK business only.
Because it combines retail and telecoms, the company needs people who understand both. Typical roles in a business like this include product and pricing, digital and app teams, customer care, retail partnership and store support, marketing, finance, and technical and regulatory specialists working with the network partner. We did not find a first-party description of the working culture or the size of the workforce, so we do not describe either.
We have not researched entry routes. A sensible first step is to look at Tesco Mobile's own website for jobs, and to compare these with roles at Tesco and Virgin Media O2, since all three are involved in the business. If you enjoy retail, customer service or mobile technology, this is a good example of how a household name can build a telecoms business.
