The Economist Group

The London-based group behind The Economist newspaper, the Economist Intelligence Unit and Economist Impact.

About The Economist Group

The Economist Group is a London media company best known for The Economist, a weekly newspaper-magazine on world affairs and business. The Group also runs 1843, a lifestyle magazine; Economist Intelligence, which provides market research and forecasts; Economist Impact, which works with organisations on research and events; and Economist Education, which offers e-learning. It has also run conferences and a members-only Corporate Network.

James Wilson founded The Economist in London in 1843. In 1928 a new ownership structure was set up with independent trustees whose role is to protect the paper's reputation for "independent judgment and unfettered criticism". The Group calls itself "the leading source of analysis on international business and world affairs", and describes its aim as "dedicated to driving progress". Economist Impact says it wants to "deliver positive societal change" by working with companies, governments and nonprofits, on themes such as sustainability and health, for example the Back to Blue ocean-health initiative with The Nippon Foundation.

In the UK, the head office is at 20 Cabot Square, Canary Wharf, London E14 4QW, according to a Creative Access profile. The Group has 25 offices across 14 countries, including other European and Asian cities and New York and Washington. A reference source gave 1,641 employees in 2023, while an older profile said more than 1,000, so figures vary. The Economist Intelligence Unit started in 1946 and Economist Conferences in 1956.

The Group describes itself as a dynamic employer with a diverse, inclusive and international working environment, with flexible scheduling and regular chances to work with teams in different regions. These are its own claims. The roles it lists as wanted include editorial, strategy and consultancy, marketing and PR, business development and sales, creative and design, human resources, accounting and finance, and IT and digital projects.

The Group has grown by adding businesses over time, such as the Journal of Commerce in 1995. A good place to start is reading a weekly edition and seeing how the business and research sides use the same analysis. Check the Group's official website for current information on offices and teams.
