The Sports Consultancy

A London sports and live-entertainment advisory firm, founded in 2006, that helps events, governing bodies and cities with strategy, sponsorship, host city selection and legal advice.

About The Sports Consultancy

The Sports Consultancy (TSC) describes itself as the London-based commercial, strategic and legal advisory for sport and live entertainment. In practice, it advises organisations that run major sports events, such as international federations, rights holders, governments and cities. Its published work includes finding host cities for events, finding sponsors and partners, building commercial strategy for championships and carrying out feasibility studies for venues. Examples reported in the trade press include host city selection for Nitro Circus and World Table Tennis, sponsor searches for the World Anti-Doping Agency and the Clipper Race, and a feasibility study for a basketball arena for the London Lions.

TSC was founded in 2006 by Angus Buchanan and Robert Datnow, both of whom trained as lawyers and had careers in sport; Mr Datnow was formerly head of legal at the British Olympic Association. Their idea was an independent consultancy, and one profile quotes the firm as saying it is one of the few independent events management consultancies, established and experienced yet nimble and flexible. Mr Buchanan has spoken of its commitment to the power of sport to create lasting impact. We have not found a separate written mission statement. Matt Wilson became managing director in May 2024.

The firm is based in central London. Its profile pages say it has done work in the Middle East and Asia, but we found no other offices named, and its events work in the UK includes championships in Liverpool and the UCI Road World Championships in Yorkshire. In 2017 it launched TSC Legal, a law firm regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and set up as an alternative business structure, so lawyers sit inside the same business as the consultants. It also has SEER, a research and intelligence unit it describes as the first focused solely on sport and entertainment.

A host city page for the firm gave a team of 43 people, which is an older figure and may have changed. TSC received the King's Award for Enterprise in May 2025, according to a trade-press report that described it as recognition of its growing influence across sports, events and entertainment. The firm says it offers tailored commitment to each client, and that many client relationships date back to its founding year. Those are the firm's own claims. The legal team's associates have come from bodies such as England Rugby 2015, LOCOG and the Football Association, showing how people move between sport organisations and advisers.

Consultancies like this employ people in several different ways: consultants who research and shape strategy, event and partnership specialists, rights marketing staff who find sponsors, researchers and data analysts, lawyers and governance advisers, and operations and finance teams. People often arrive after a degree in sport management, business, law or economics, or after working for a club or governing body. If you enjoy a mix of sport, problem-solving and presenting ideas to clients, this is a part of the sports world where it all comes together. TSC's own website lists what is open now.
