Tokamak Energy

An Oxfordshire fusion energy company that builds powerful superconducting magnets and fusion technology.

About Tokamak Energy

Tokamak Energy works on fusion energy, the process that powers the sun, and on high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets. Its website describes its focus as delivering superconducting and fusion energy technologies, including magnet and power systems and advanced manufacturing. In August 2026 its chief executive described it as a systems business built around HTS magnets, not a company building its own power plant.

The website does not give a formal mission statement. An earlier company description said the aim is to accelerate fusion power as a clean, reliable source of energy, and a 2023 article described demonstrating clean, grid-ready fusion power by the early 2030s.

The headquarters is at Milton Park, Oxfordshire. It also has a US company (Tokamak Energy Inc.) and a Japanese company (Tokamak Energy K.K.). A guest biography in August 2026 says it employs over 300 people in Oxfordshire. It was founded in 2009 as a spin-out from the UK Atomic Energy Authority, and its news page shows regular announcements through to October 2026.

We did not find a values page. The 2023 article names Warrick Matthews as chief executive and says the company has taken on apprentices, with its first joining the health and safety team in 2022.

This is one of the clearer routes into the sector. The company has described four-year Level 3 engineering apprenticeships run with Oxfordshire Advanced Skills (2023), and a Level 3 mechatronics apprenticeship in its magnets team advertised via the UKAEA apprenticeship service with a closing date of 1 June 2025 (as at 2025). It has also listed a graduate buyer role (July 2024) and summer placements. Its website has an Early careers page, so check it for current openings.
