Towergate Insurance Brokers is a UK insurance broker. It arranges personal and business insurance from more than 200 general and specialist policies, supported by over 2,000 specialists. Its offer is organised into six specialisms: home and property, lifestyle (such as caravan and boat cover), commercial property for landlords and business premises, business insurance for small firms and trades, care and medical, and motor. It is part of Ardonagh Advisory, which describes itself as the UK's largest independent brokerage. The brand still trades under its own name within the Ardonagh Group.
Peter Cullum founded Towergate in 1997 to serve niche insurance markets, and it grew by joining together a number of independent brokers. In 2017 it became part of the group that was renamed the Ardonagh Group. Ardonagh says it brings together specialist and entrepreneurial businesses, and its site describes colleagues as "progressive, passionate and proud to drive the best client outcomes". The model at Towergate centres on what it calls a "value triangle", a three-way partnership between the broker, its insurers and its customers.
Towergate's head office is at 2 Minster Court, Mincing Lane, London EC3R 7PD, which is also the registered address of Ardonagh Group Holdings. A trade profile gives about 2,800 employees and 70 UK offices. A 2016 regional article listed branches in Yorkshire, including Hull, Leeds, Halifax, Sheffield and Knaresborough, with about 530 staff in the region at that time, so the broker has long had a spread of local offices.
Richard Tuplin became chief executive of Towergate Insurance Brokers in March 2022. He came from Ethos Broking, part of the Ardonagh platform, after 18 years in independent broking. He has said he wants to remove complexity, focus on people and show how happy, fulfilled staff lead to good customer service. He has also said he wants to better explain the appeal of insurance careers to people outside the industry, so Towergate does not seem impersonal.
