Truespeed

A full fibre broadband provider that builds ultrafast networks for rural communities in the South West and East Anglia, and which has combined with Freedom Fibre.

About Truespeed

Truespeed is a UK broadband provider that offers ultrafast, symmetrical full fibre connections to homes and businesses. Symmetrical means upload and download speeds are the same, which helps with video calls, cloud working and gaming. Its products include home and business broadband, Truespeed Wi-Fi and a phone line. A recent merger with Freedom Fibre created the Freedom Truespeed Group, in which Truespeed is the customer-facing brand and Freedom Fibre runs the wholesale open-access network, serving more than 419,000 properties and around 73,000 customers across the group, according to Truespeed.

The company says it was founded in 2014 by people who were frustrated with slow, unreliable rural broadband. Its stated mission is to bring future-proofed connectivity to overlooked communities, and the site states that "everyone has the right to a broadband connection that works." Its network grew across the rural South West, including Devon, Somerset and Wiltshire, and into East Anglia. We did not find the founders named in the pages we read.

Truespeed Communications Limited is registered in England and Wales, and the company does not state a headquarters town on the pages we read. A 2023 industry report described it as deploying full fibre mainly in Devon, Wiltshire and Somerset. On its community page, Truespeed says it gives free full fibre connections to primary schools and community hubs in every area its network passes, and describes meeting council members, residents and other representatives wherever it builds. It also hosts events to bring communities together and help local businesses.

On culture, Truespeed emphasises a team of dedicated people with a shared goal and friendly UK-based customer support. It reports strong customer review scores, which are its own claims. It supports local sports clubs and community centres and is the official broadband and public Wi-Fi partner of Bath Rugby, with joint outreach work. Its founding belief, in its own words, is that no community should be left behind.

Like other network builders, Truespeed needs network designers, engineers who lay and connect fibre, community liaison staff, customer support and sales teams, and finance, marketing and technology specialists. Because it works in rural areas, many roles involve travelling and speaking to local people. If you like the countryside and want to see the difference technology makes to a village or a school, it is worth watching. Engineering, geography, computing, business and communication subjects all link to this work.
