UK Power Networks

Britain's biggest electricity distribution network, supplying London, the South East and the East of England, with a graduate scheme and large craft apprenticeship intakes.

About UK Power Networks

UK Power Networks distributes electricity to about 8.5 million homes and businesses across London, the South East and the East of England. Its people design, build, repair and run the cables, overhead lines and substations that bring power to your door.

We did not find a formal mission statement. The closest wording found is from a company director, who said graduates will "help us address the challenges of facilitating the delivery of the low carbon transition for our customers."

New starters are mainly based in Crawley, Maidstone and Stevenage, plus several sites in London. Craft apprentices have worked from places such as Purfleet, Colchester and Heathrow, and train at company centres in Kent and Suffolk.

One apprentice described the company as "very welcoming and friendly" and said "Everyone is equal and everyone is respectful". That is a single quote from a company news article, not independent evidence. The company says it values transferable skills and life experience.

In October 2024 the company reported a two-year graduate scheme, its first post-university scheme in over five years, with eleven graduates chosen from more than 4,400 applicants. Roles included innovation, design and distribution system operator work. In November 2023 it reported 54 craft apprenticeships that year (overhead linesperson, substation fitter, cable jointer), lasting two years for experienced career changers and three years for foundation apprentices. Pay and entry requirements were not stated in either article. An innovation graduate engineer vacancy was also listed on its careers site. Check the careers site for current intakes.
