The UK operation of United Parcel Service, running parcel hubs at Tamworth and London Gateway, air gateways at East Midlands and Stansted, and a delivery fleet across Britain.
UPS in the UK carries parcels and freight for businesses and individuals, within Britain and across borders. Comparison guides describe its UK work as business-to-business shipments, heavier domestic parcels, international e-commerce and shipment-management tools, supported by a network of UK Access Point drop-off and collection points, including parcel lockers. UPS UK is part of a global company, and the senior role covering the UK is president of UPS UK, Ireland and Nordics. Mark Vale held that role at the time of the London Gateway opening. A March 2024 report named Markus Kessler as the UPS country cluster manager covering the UK, Ireland and the Nordic countries.
UPS says little in the sources we read about a UK mission, but the company stresses sustainability and cutting emissions. A submission hosted by the Greater London Authority describes electric vehicles in central London, a fuel-efficient air fleet and a Low Impact City Logistics project. UPS bought the UK company Lynx Express in 2005 and then merged three hubs in Nuneaton into one site at Tamworth. A 2008 report called the Tamworth hub, with 29,000 square metres and the ability to sort 42,000 packages an hour, UPS's largest UK facility and the second largest in Europe.
The more recent flagship is the DP World London Gateway site, a £120m sorting and delivery centre with more than four miles of conveyor belts that can process over 28,000 packages an hour. Trade press said it was expected to create around 500 jobs, and the Transport Secretary at the time attended the opening and called it the "London Hub". UPS also runs two UK air gateways, at East Midlands Airport and Stansted. The same Greater London Authority submission, which quotes 2010 data and is undated, reported about 8,000 people working for UPS in the UK, more than 50 operating facilities and a fleet of more than 2,200 vehicles. Treat those numbers as old.
At the London Gateway opening, Mark Vale called the investment "tangible proof of UPS's commitment to helping customers doing business in and with the UK". UPS UK said its export volumes rose nearly 20% in 2017. In terms of culture, we found no first-party description. The sources do show a company that invests in infrastructure and in electric vehicles, including a trial of all-electric trucks in London and Paris.
A parcel company this large employs people in many roles. Drivers and delivery staff, package handlers and shift supervisors work in hubs and depots. Pilots and ground crew support the air gateways, while mechanics and fleet staff keep vehicles running. Customs and trade specialists, customer service teams, IT, sales, finance and people teams support the business. If you are interested in trade and exports, vehicles or large-scale automation, UPS UK gives you many angles to explore.
