VodafoneThree

A Newbury-based UK mobile company formed from the merger of Vodafone UK and Three UK, running two well-known mobile brands.

About VodafoneThree

VodafoneThree is a UK mobile network company created by joining two existing operators, Vodafone UK and Three UK. It runs mobile networks that carry calls, texts and data, and sells services under both the Vodafone and Three names. According to Wikipedia, the two companies together have about 28 million subscribers, which makes it the UK's largest mobile operator by that measure. The two brands continue to exist side by side, and the plan reported is for customers to get access to a shared network in time. This is a good company to look at if you are curious how big mobile networks actually work.

The merger was agreed in 2023, went through a competition review by the Competition and Markets Authority, was approved with commitments on 5G roll-out and customer price protection in December 2024, and completed in 2025. Wikipedia says the company announced a plan to invest in UK networks over the next decade. The pages we read do not give a formal mission statement. The only slogan we found is the title of a news page, "Building the UK's Best Network", so that is the nearest thing to a stated purpose.

The company's headquarters are in Newbury, Berkshire. In February 2026 it announced that Three would move from its Reading base at Green Park to Newbury by the end of 2026, and in April 2026 it began combining Vodafone and Three shops so that stores sell and support both brands. Some shops where the two overlapped are closing. Behind the shops sits the less visible part of the business: the masts, radio equipment and fibre links that make a network work in towns, cities and the countryside.

Wikipedia names Max Taylor as chief executive and Darren Purkis as chief financial officer. We could not find a headcount or any detailed description of working culture on the pages we read, so we cannot say what the day-to-day atmosphere is like. A merger of this size brings together teams from both companies, so roles are likely to span network engineering, radio planning, data and analytics, software, retail and customer service, marketing, finance, legal and integration project management. Merging systems and teams is a big task in itself, and it creates work for people who like organising complicated change.

We have not researched early-careers routes. A sensible next step is to visit the careers sections of the Vodafone UK and Three UK websites and look at the types of role advertised. If you want to understand the company better first, reading about how mobile networks are built and shared, and about why regulators examine mergers like this one, is a useful way to learn the language used in interviews and applications for telecoms jobs.
