Wavemobile

A small UK mobile network operator that builds local 2G, 4G and 5G networks to bring phone signal to rural places and to venues that the big networks do not reach.

About Wavemobile

Wavemobile is an independent UK mobile network operator that fills in gaps in coverage. Many rural areas are "coverage islands" where the large networks do not reach well. Wavemobile builds small local networks there, and also inside buildings, using 2G, 4G, LTE-M and 5G standalone technology. It uses British-made radios from a company called cellXica, its own core network (the central software that connects calls and data), and backhaul over fibre, satellite and other links. Customers include emergency services, communities, local governments and businesses in rural and underserved places.

A July 2026 ISPreview article says its network recently passed five million unique connected devices. The devices belong to customers of other operators, including VodafoneThree, O2, EE and Sky Mobile, which the article names as the largest MVNO (a company that sells mobile service over another operator's network) using Wavemobile's network, and it adds that well over 100,000 IoT SIM cards use it. The company also says it exhibited at MWC Barcelona, serving over four million devices at that time. We found no formal mission statement, but its aim is plain from its own description: flexible answers to coverage gaps.

Wavemobile's registered company is Wave Mobile Ltd, which Companies House shows was incorporated on 29 May 2003, is active, and has a registered office in Richmond, Surrey, with industry codes for wireless and other telecommunications. The company's site says its equipment is designed and built in the UK. We could not confirm an operational base or where its engineers work, so we describe it as UK-registered with its network located in the UK. Its communities model asks local people to provide the site, connectivity and power while Wavemobile provides spectrum, core network, roaming and support.

We found no founders, leadership or staff named in the pages we read. So there is little we can say about people or culture. The company clearly works closely with communities and local organisations, since its approach depends on local people hosting equipment. It also works with the large networks, because it relies on their roaming for coverage outside its own small cells.

A small network operator needs a wide mix of skills. Radio and network engineers design and install sites, core network specialists keep calls and data flowing, and software and support staff monitor the network. Customer-facing and community teams talk with villages, venues and public bodies about getting a signal. If you like radio, computing, rural issues or the idea that a small team can fix a real problem for a village, Wavemobile is an interesting small employer to know.
