A British clothing brand, founded in 1985, known for relaxed, colourful womenswear and menswear and for giving 1% of profits to a charitable foundation.
White Stuff sells women's, men's and children's clothing, accessories, homeware and gifts. It is known for traditional British styles, quirky shops and playful marketing. As of October 2024 it had 113 UK stores and 46 concessions, which are small shops inside other retailers, and it also sells through stockists such as John Lewis and House of Fraser and, in Europe, partners such as John Lewis and Marks & Spencer.
The brand was founded in 1985 by George Treves and Sean Thomas in the French Alpine resort of Val d'Isere, where they sold printed T-shirts and sweatshirts from a suitcase in hotels and bars. Its original name was Boys from the White Stuff. The first store opened in Clapham, London, in 1991. In 2004 the founders hired Sally Bailey, a former brand director at Miss Selfridge, to develop the brand. In October 2024 White Stuff was bought by TFG London, a South African retail group, and it continues as a subsidiary. We did not find a formal mission statement in the sources we read, so we have not invented one.
The company's headquarters is in London, according to Wikipedia, and its shops are spread across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, as well as the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. We could not find a current headcount, and the sources we read did not mention any other UK offices or distribution sites.
White Stuff's culture shows up in the way its shops are run. Stores host events, allow customers to bring pets, and include children's areas with colouring books and dens, and some have cinemas or pick 'n' mix counters. Each shop runs its own fundraising, such as bake sales and raffles. In May 2010, for the company's 25th anniversary, it started the White Stuff Foundation, which is funded by 1% of the company's profits and supports more than 100 small UK charities, mostly near its stores and distribution centres, plus two in India and two in Denmark. These are the company's own claims, which we have not independently checked.
The business employs people in design and buying, merchandising, marketing and brand teams, e-commerce, finance and people teams, store managers and sales colleagues across the country, and warehouse staff. Jo Jenkins, who came from Marks & Spencer, has led the company since 2018. For anyone interested in how a values-led retailer works, with charity giving and a distinctive shop experience, White Stuff gives a clear example, and the stores themselves are a good way to see it in practice.
