A British-American company developing hydrogen-electric engines so that regional aircraft can fly with no carbon emissions, with its UK team at Kemble in Gloucestershire.
ZeroAvia develops hydrogen-electric propulsion for aircraft. Its engines turn hydrogen into electricity in a fuel cell and use that electricity to drive electric motors and propellers, so the only things coming out are water and heat. Its ZA600 engine is aimed at planes with 9 to 19 seats, and the company is working with the US regulator, the FAA, towards certification. It has flown a hydrogen-electric Dornier 228 test aircraft, which it describes as the largest aircraft flown with this kind of technology.
ZeroAvia says its mission is to decarbonise aviation and, in a job advert, to achieve "truly clean, guilt-free flight". It calls its approach "Clean Sky Thinking". Founder and chief executive Val Miftakhov has said the aim is climate-friendly flying without asking passengers to pay more or fly less. The engine tests are part of HyFlyer II, a project partly funded by the UK Government.
ZeroAvia describes itself as British-American, with a US base in Hollister, California, and offices in Everett, Washington. Its UK team works at Cotswold Airport near Kemble in Gloucestershire, where it has a hangar and flight test site and where its Dornier 228 flew in January 2023. A July 2023 release says ten flights were completed there. A job board lists UK roles at Kemble including test, manufacturing, systems and software engineers. In 2024 the UK aviation regulator named ZeroAvia among the first firms in its Hydrogen Challenge Sandbox, and an April 2026 article shows the engine is still progressing.
The company describes a "high-velocity culture" that values results, efficiency, radical ownership and asking questions. Staff are called "ZeroAvians". Its careers page says it is growing fast and that people get broad exposure, support to upskill and access to experienced colleagues. A job board gave about 154 employees. All of this is the company's own description. In the July 2023 release, test lead Gabriele Teofili said that plenty of people go through 40-year careers without marking their name in aerospace history.
ZeroAvia has an early careers page that lists graduates, internships, apprenticeships and work experience placements, though we could not read the details of each. One older apprenticeship advert for an IT technician stated that applications were made through the Find an Apprenticeship service; it is closed and undated. The company says it needs people from different backgrounds. Check the careers page for current Kemble vacancies, and note that most advertised roles are for experienced engineers.
